I've also watched the finals and compared it to Pavarotti's rendition. While Pavarotti's voice is warmer, I like the fact that PP's voice actually suits the Puccini part much more - he sounds a lot more desperate than Pavarotti does. Technically speaking perhaps not the most flawless performance but still what a voice Paul Potts has and that without any formal training. It is rather objectionable though that in this first round they cut up the aria to nicely fit in a two minute slot, it loses almost all of the dramatic build-up. Definitely worth watching the final where he sings the aria in full or Pavarotti's last performance of it at in Torino.
